Gmail Growl V2.1

Gmail Growl V2.1 adds Windows 7 support and makes the browser selectable. In addition, the behaviour for Gmail outages is changed such that Gmail Growl no longer deadlocks with error messages like "Cannot connect to Gmail".

The Windows 7 support looks like this:
  • The task bar icon shows the number of unread items:
  • Hovering on the task bar icon shows a summary and the most important features as buttons:
  • Using next and previous buttons, all unread messages can be previewed:
  • Right clicking on the tray icon shows a menu with all possible actions and shortcuts to all unread mails:
  • For Windows 7, the user can select to either use the old style system tray version, the new task bar, or both:
If you like Gmail Growl, please donate.

All comments, suggestions, feedback, or bug reports are always welcome.

Very nice little program.

The new version's aggressive tactic of asking for donations put me off though. I donate when it's up to me entirely, not when I'm being forced to.

Just my two cents:)

Agreed, great program but the constant donation reminders are annoying. I use it for gmail push and the donation alerts get forwarded to my phone.

C'mon, its just 1€ to get rid of this.
The guy doing this has to make a living...

If the next update doesn't take away the nagging reminders to donate I'm going to stop use this piece of software.

Anonymous said...

My virus scanner removed it :(

Also, it's kinda annoying that this is listed as Freeware, not shareware or payware. I kinda expect nagging reminders from the latter two. Not from something listed as Freeware.

Thanks for the updates. They are great

The donation aspect as previously mentioned is not very cool.

The donation aspect has also prompted me to stop using this software. I didn't realize it pops up as frequently as it does. This is a very pathetic way to squeeze a few dollars out of a very limited pool of people who actually use this software. There are alternatives out there that are actually free and work much better. Thank you for prompting me to find a better solution!

Hello, I recently ran into this program and it's exactly what I needed. The problem is I can't seem to login for some reason. I've tried the older versions of this program but nothing seems to work for some reason. Weird thing is I get the green okay mark next to "Gmail Account #1" and yet at the bottom it tells me it cannot connect to Google. Any idea what's causing this?

Markus Mohnen said...

@Kakkun: Please start Gmail Growl and try again what you did. While Gmail Growl is still running open the folder "%APPDATA%\Gmail Growl", you will find a log file there. Send this to send cases@gmailgrowl.fogbugz.com and I will have a look at this.

I have been using your software for around 9 months. However, after updating, I am done. Waaaaaay to aggressive with the donations thing... you have alienated your user base with this.. I will find another solution.

Anonymous said...

App tries to open 3 times and quits each time. You can see the tray icon pop up 3 times and then immediately disappear. All logs in %APPDATA%\Gmail Growl\ are 0 kb. Running Win7 x64 Ult.

Markus Mohnen said...

@Anonymous: Please open a command window and run the following command:
"c:\Program Files\Markus Mohnen\Gmail Growl\gmailgrowlworker.exe" > "%APPDATA%\log.txt"
Send log.txt to send cases@gmailgrowl.fogbugz.com and I will have a look at this.

Too aggressive with the donations. Looks like someone will fire up another non-intrusive solution as a result.

Anonymous said...

A few have mentioned better alternatives. What are they? I'd like to check them out.

I also agree the donation requests are a tad annoying, once a day would suffice. Needless to say I did donate 1 Euro but had wrong email address primary in paypal, tried to email you to fix it but no response. I need to get rid of these prompts!

Markus Mohnen said...

@Anonymous: Please send your "wrong email address primary in paypal" and your paypal transaction ID to cases@gmailgrowl.fogbugz.com.

G-Push is one. It costs a bit more ($1.99 versus about $1.30) but just runs as an app on your phone. It isn't subject to the whims of your desktop either, so when those Thursday critical windows updates come around that shut down your computer, you won't be out of luck until you get get back to your computer to put in your password.

You also don't have to worry about the application crashing or having connection problems, like Gmail Growl has from time to time.

It seems I cannot uninstall the old gmail growl 2.0 beta. During the installation of the new version I'm told I need gmailgrowlV2.0.0.1.msi but ive since deleted the install file.

It seems to also have been removed from your old blog post :\

Can you please re-upload it or instruct me how to properly uninstall this old version?

Thanks, Will

Markus Mohnen said...

@Will: It seems that your windows installer db got corrupted. Please use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us to remove the Gmail Growl V2.0.0.1 installer entry.

Is it expected for this app to be constantly sucking 5-7% cpu usage? Seems to improve marginally when I turn off push notification, but only marginally.

TB said...

How come it can only monitor the Inbox, Starred, and All Mail labels?

Markus Mohnen said...

@TB: It could monitor all labels, but unfortunately I found no way to get the list of labels.

TB said...

@Markus
Then would it be possible to manually enter a label in instead of selecting from a drop down box? And wouldn't it be possible to connect via IMAP and get a list of folder names (i.e. labels)?

Markus Mohnen said...

@TB: I thought of this as well, but the problem is that Gmail Growl cannot check if the manually entered label is a valid one: Gmail just returns a list of zero unread mails for invalid labels.
Getting the list via IMAP would work, but obviously only if there is an IMAP connection. Gmail Growl is made to also work w/o an IMAP connection.
But I keep this issue on my future feature list.

Markus, I just updated today and i must say, this update contained A LOT of warnings from eset 4.0, this is something you may want to look into.

if i had to guess i would say i clicked over 30 ignore buttons

I have a suggestion. Can you make it so that Gmail Growl will open in an application shortcut of Chrome?

Markus Mohnen said...

Mason, this would be possibe, but with a drawback: A new Chrome window would open each time a mail or the inbox is opened from Gmail Growl. I have found no way to recycle an existing Chrome Gmail application window.

I am still having the error of Gmail rejecting credential from time to time (almost daily). Like other users reported in the previous version, I have to reset the password to Gmail and re-login again to fix this.

I tried to uninstall Gmail Growl, delete %AppData%\Gmail Growl, and reinstall again. But this didn't solve the issue.

Markus, can you provide a fix for this prominent bug?

Markus Mohnen said...

@Brian_T: I'm sorry to hear this, I really hoped that the bug was gone with V2.1. I checked the current code again: The only way where Gmail Growl does not automatically reconnect after 10 sec is when the preferences window is open. I assume that this is not the case?

Hi, nice app, been using it for a while now and finally donated.

I use the systray icon only, and with multiple gmail accounts.

Would it be possible to request that if i have mail from any gmail account setup, that it opens up the respective account webmail? Thanks. ;-)

sam said...

Sorry, to be clear i mean't to say.. if i have NEW mail..

Markus Mohnen said...

Hi Sam,

the only way I found to open the respective account would require to transmit your credentials in the URL. This would allow others to see your credentials in the http traffic. Since this would not be secure, I did not add this feature. I'm still investigating if there is a save way to log in to Gmail.

Markus

Hi Markus,

i understand. What about the relevant 'login' pages are opened for the inboxes with mail?

2nd mail account has mail, 1st doesn't and it still only opens the 1st url. See what i mean? :-)

Todd Hammond said...

Hi Markus, thanks for this update. All that is needed now is the "All Mail, except label: SPAM" option. Hope we can have that soon!

brian dunnington said...

@Markus - i have noticed a strange behavior with the app. if Growl is already running when i launch GmailGrowl, it goes into a loop of trying to launch Growl (causing Growl to show the 'Growl is running' notification) and then showing the 'Do you like me?' donation solicitation notification. it looks like it cant detect that Growl is already running and keeps restarting itself or something. I am on Win7 (32-bit). has anyone else experienced this? (if i launch GmailGrowl first, it tries to launch Growl and everything seems to work OK).

Yosh said...

Either offer it for free or don't. I'd be more inclined to either pay you for the software or donate if you had just asked once.

I'm uninstalling this program and not donating to discourage these aggressive donation request tactics.

I understand you have to make money, but you're going about it the wrong way. You might as well make it pay software, because it's pretty much impossible to use for free.

How do I get rid of gmailgrowlworker in the nofication area. I've uninstalled, but it's still there.
