Gmail Growl V2.3

With Gmail Growl V2.3, some new features are added:

Account specific notifications
Gmail Growl now registers "New Mail" notifications for each Gmail account separate. This allows different displays, forward settings etc. in Growl based on the account.

URL shortening with Goo.gl
Since a recent version of Growl, the URL to the message was added to the screen notification. The URL is needed for notifications forwarded to mobile devices. To reduce the amount of text displayed through Growl, the URLs are now shortened with Goo.gl.
Embedded experimental mini implementation of Growl
You can now use Gmail Growl without installing Growl for Windows. V2.3 contains a very basic experimental implementation of the Growl notification transport protocol (GNTP). There is no forwarding or networking and it only has a single display similar to the default display of Growl. The displays can be done without coding, but I did not have time to do a manual for this. If you like puzzles, just look at the files in Gmail Growl\MiniGrowl\displays.

In addition, Gmail Growl V2.3 fixes a display problem with the Windows 7 Taskbar icon where the unread items count was not removed when there were no unread mails.

Please note that for push notifications, Gmail Growl needs the "All Mail" label to be exposed by Gmail through IMAP. If you have disabled this using the Google Labs feature "Advanced IMAP Controls", then push notifications do not work in Gmail Growl. This version contains a specific check for this situation.

Gmail Growl V2.2.0.2

This version fixes a problem in V2.2 which caused the push connectivity in Gmail Growl to break. The problem occurred only sometimes, but now I was finally able to track it down. I found that sometimes Gmail reports the All Mail folder via IMAP XLIST this way:

XLIST (\HasNoChildren \AllMail) "/" "[Gmail]/All Mail"

and sometimes this way (which makes no sense):

XLIST (\HasChildren \HasNoChildren \AllMail) "/" "[Gmail]/All Mail"This second form broke the parser in Gmail Growl V2.2. The new version has a more robust parser.

Gmail Growl V2.2

This version adds support for the new Gmail Priority Inbox feature. By selection the label "Important" only the new and important mails found in the priority inbox are shown by Gmail Growl.

Another new label "Unread" monitors all labels except spam and trash, while the old label "All" continues to include everything.

The recent introduction of Gmail's Multiple Account Sign-In feature broke the functionality that clicking on a notification opens the message, this is corrected now.

Finally, this version includes a streamlined preferences page and performance improvements.

Gmail Growl V2.1 adds Windows 7 support and makes the browser selectable. In addition, the behaviour for Gmail outages is changed such that Gmail Growl no longer deadlocks with error messages like "Cannot connect to Gmail".

Gmail Growl V2.0 BETA

The first beta version of Gmail Growl V2 with the long awaited multiple Gmail account feature is available:

You can also watch the same Gmail account with different labels. The functions “Open Gmail Inbox” and “New Mail” always use the first Gmail account. The number of inboxes is not limited, but please watch for performance penalties.

In addition, this version is able to handle Gmail outages and Growl outages. And finally, this version fixes the nasty bug which caused notifications of some mails to fail: It’s Gmails fault! Gmail uses UTC timestamps “YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssZ”, but the timestamps are wrong sometimes: hh=24 should be hh=00 instead.

Update, 27-Sep-09: I have just updated the V2.0 BETA to V2.0.0.1. In V2.0.0.0 mailto: links were broken.

Gmail Growl V1.6.1.8

Gmail Growl V1.6.1.8 only contains bug fixes, especially for the number of unread mails shown in the tray and tray tip.

I just detected that the IMAP folder structure of Gmail depends on the user interface language. This causes the Gmail Push feature of Gmail Growl to break with non-inbox labels and non-English user interface.

A single new feature is included (thanks to Berdon for his suggestion): A single click on the tray icon shows the last notifications again.

Gmail Growl V1.5 has a bug which causes the program to crash under certain conditions. I hope to have this fixed soon.

Update, 28-Jul-2009: Please check with the preliminary V1.6.1 available here. It fixes the "Array variable has incorrect number ..." bug, makes the Gmail Push more stable, and is more robust to changing IP addresses and OpenSSL problems.
In addition, there is the new feature to select which of the labels "Inbox", "All Mail" or "Starred" to monitor.
Update, 30-Jul-2009: When using V1.6.1, please make sure the folder "%APPDATA%\Gmail Growl" exists before running Gmail Growl. The final gmailgrowlV1.6.1.msi will include the creation of this folder.

Gmail Growl V1.5 is focused on improving the support for Prowl, a great Growl client for the iPhone.

New Feature: Gmail Push support. With Gmail Push, notifications on new mails are almost immediately.
Gmail Growl uses IMAP IDLE to get notified on changes in your Gmail inbox.
If your (corporate :-) network does not allow IMAP connections to Gmail, Gmail Growl will fall back to polling.
New Feature: Show sender name in notification.
With this version, the title of the notification shows the sender instead of the subject. The subject is moved to the text of the notification.
New Feature: Added URL to the notification.
The URL of the new mail is added to the end of the summary. From the Prowl notification, you can immediately open mobile Gmail. Unfortunately, mobile Gmail does open the inbox and not the new mail.
New Feature: Show Me Again.
If you missed the last new mails, Gmail Growl can show them again.
New Feature: Auto detect network changes.
Gmail Growl detects network changes including re-detection of proxy and Gmail Push, for instance when moving from LAN to Wi-Fi in a corporate environment.
New Feature: Hotkey for compose from clipboard.
Pressing Win-C opens the Gmail compose window with the content of the clipboard as message body.
Bug Fix: Improved proxy detection.
Under certain conditions, auto detection did not work correctly.
Bug Fix: Wrap to growlforwindows.com only once in a lifetime.
When both Gmail Growl and Growl for Windows are set to start with Windows, Gmail Growl sometimes failed to detect Growl for Windows. When this happened, Gmail Growl will send you to growlforwindows.com only once.

The proxy handling in V1.3 was pretty broken and caused quite a lot of trouble. I am sorry for this.

In Gmail Growl V1.4 the proxy handling is improved in several ways. This should remove the "AutoIt -1" errors and allow all Gmail users to log in, even through company proxies.

In addition, there are the following improvements:

New Feature: Updates unread mail status now menu entry.

False positives for Gmail Growl

The recent version V1.2 of Gmail Growl causes several anti-virus programs to show virus warnings. These are false positives! I use AutoIt to make Gmail Growl and it seems that the software compression packer of AutoIt is causing the false positive.

I replaced the download with a new version created without the software compression packer.

V1.1 contains the following improvements:

New Feature: Gmail Growl can register as mailto handler for web pages.
By default this feature is turned off. You can safely test this, since Gmail Growl will restore the previous mailto handler when the feature is deactivated again.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in the start-up behaviour which prevented Gmail Growl from starting in certain environments

Gmail Growl will detect this new version on start-up and notify you. Using Growl, of course!

If you don't like this, wou can use the Growl settings to not show this notifications.
